How to Play Backgammon Online
Getting started is simple, but mastering the board takes practice:
- The Objective: Be the first player to move all 15 of your checkers off the board. Checkers move around the board in a U-shape towards your home board.
-
Controls (Typical):
- Rolling Dice: Click the dice or a "Roll" button to start your turn.
- Moving Checkers: Click on a checker and then click on a valid destination point (triangle). The game will usually highlight possible moves.
-
Gameplay Basics:
- Setup: Each player starts with 15 checkers placed in a standard starting formation on the 24 points (triangles) of the board.
- Movement: Players roll two dice and move their checkers according to the numbers rolled. You can move one checker for each die roll, or one checker for the total of both dice if the path is clear. If you roll doubles, you play each die twice (four moves).
- Hitting a Blot: If you land on a point occupied by a single opponent checker (a "blot"), that checker is "hit" and moved to the bar (the central divider). The opponent must re-enter this checker from the bar before making any other moves.
- Making Points: Two or more of your checkers on a single point create a "made point," which your opponent cannot land on.
- Bearing Off: Once all 15 of your checkers are in your home board (your final quadrant), you can start "bearing off" – moving them off the board. Checkers are removed based on dice rolls corresponding to their position from the edge.
- Doubling Cube (Optional): Many versions include a doubling cube, allowing players to raise the stakes of the game.
Tips for Dominating the Board
Improve your game with these strategic insights:
- Secure Key Points: Making points in your home board and your opponent's outer board can block their movement and provide safe landing spots for you. The 5-point is often considered crucial.
- Hit Blots When Advantageous: Sending an opponent's checker to the bar can disrupt their plans and gain you valuable time.
- Balance Running and Blocking: Decide whether to race your checkers home (a "running game") or build a defensive wall to hinder your opponent (a "blocking game").
- Avoid Leaving Too Many Blots: Minimize vulnerable single checkers, especially in your opponent's path.
- Understand the Doubling Cube: If playing with one, learn when to offer a double and when to accept or decline one. This adds a deep layer of strategy.
- Adapt to the Dice: Be flexible. The best strategy can change based on the rolls you and your opponent get.
